Nero d’Avola is the most important and widely planted red grape variety on the Island of Sicily. The dark skinned grape has an important history in Sicily and takes its name from the town of Avola on the island’s southeast coast.  Mainly used in blends in the past but with the turn of the 21st Century we started seeing single varietal wines popping up. Depending on the method the wine produced from this grape can be dense and dark, with the ability to be oak aged or be made in a young, fresh style. The younger wines have plenty of plum and juicy red-fruit flavours while the richer wines show flavours of chocolate and dark raspberries.
