Malbec - Proemio - Maipu - Mendoza - Argentina
The Somerset Wine Co
Proemio or 'prologue' in old Medieval Spanish, stands for kick-start or first page, of which this winery certainly lives by it's name. In 2001 Marcelo Bocardo, third generation winemaker and the descendant of a Italian immigrant family, founded Proemio with the goal of producing high quality wines that truly represent the land and his ancestors’ passion for winemaking. His wines are certainly a result of that goal. This wine is 100% Malbec from ten-year old sustainable vineyards in Maipú (2,624 feet above sea level). It was manually harvested, fermented and macerated in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, completely un-oaked and unfiltered - making for a rich and flavoursome style. The wines are aged in bottle to add complexity and softness.
Deep Purple in colour, woody aromas of pencil shavings and dried leaves, fruit aromas of plums and blackberries, and spice aromas of cracked pepper and vanilla. On the palate it’s medium bodied with a ridiculously smooth and lush mouthfeel, and soft sweet tannin. Big and fruity, jammy, and earthy with a silky finish – pure pleasure.
Malbec (especially Argentine) calls for steak really but any meat or rich sauces will pair well.
