Michel Rolland is a legend in the wine world. As a consultant, he regularly works with world famous châteaux like Angélus, Ausone and Giscours, the wines of which will cost you more than a few bob! Back in 1986, Michel and wife Dany bought Château Fontenil in sleepy Fronsac on the Right Bank of the Gironde. They planned to have it just as their home, but couldn’t resist and, over 13 years, renovated the estate from the roots up. It’s a top spot (highest in Fronsac) in the heart of Merlot country, where a slightly cooler climate plus clay and limestone soils produce wines with depth and freshness. The vines are around 45 years old, so flavour is intense.
Glorious aromas of cassis, dark plum and damson. Soft and rounded mouthfeel, with integrated tannins. The medium to full-bodied palate has bags of purity and minerality with a firm frame of chewy tannins and lively acid line lifting the youthful fruit to a long finish. This should age beautifully!

This is very dense and super silky, ripe tannins. Full and beautiful. Lots of wet earth, asphalt and blueberry character. One of best ever. Pure Merlot. www.JamesSuckling.com
Michel Rolland's property and one of his best yet. Spice and dark fruit notes and a sumptuous texture. Tannins are plentiful but really fine. Freshness and length on the finish. Harmonious. Apr 2016, James Lawther MW, www.Decanter.com, Drink: 2021-2030
